Meet Tanitoluwa Adewumi an 8 year old Nigerian whose family got displaced during the boko haram insurgency in the northern part of Nigeria. With some assistance, they found their way to New York and were living in a homeless shelter. He got enrolled in a school where he got interested in the chess club, yet his parents couldnt afford to pay the clubs fees. His mother begged the chess instructor to permit him and he agreed.
Just a year after, Tanitoluwa emerged winner of New York State Chess Championships, beating rich kids in his categories who have private chess instructors, to become champion.
