**Chapter 1: The Stillness of Lena**

The air in the small, mud-brick hut was thick with the scent of herbs and exertion. Elara, utterly spent but buzzing with a joy she’d never known, watched as the village midwife swaddled her newborn. "A healthy girl, Elara," the old woman announced, her voice raspy but kind. "Beautiful."

Elara reached out a trembling hand, her fingers brushing the soft, dark hair on her daughter’s head. Lena. She was perfect – tiny hands, plump cheeks, and eyes like two deep, polished stones. Yet, a profound quiet hung in the air. Other newborns, Elara knew, entered the world with a furious protest, a resounding cry that filled every corner. Lena, however, made no sound. Not a whimper. Not even a sigh.

The midwife, accustomed to the boisterous arrivals, merely shrugged. "A peaceful spirit, then," she muttered, before heading out to deliver the news. But as the door creaked shut, leaving Elara alone with her silent child, a prickle of unease snaked up her spine. Lena lay still, her tiny chest rising and falling imperceptibly, her dark eyes wide open, staring… not at Elara, but seemingly *through* the thatched roof, into something vast and unseen.

Elara leaned in close, her heart thumping. Was she breathing? Yes. Was she well? She seemed it. But the silence, so absolute, was starting to feel less like peace and more like… a void. In the nearby N'dovu Forest, the ancient trees, heavy with unspoken histories, seemed to lean closer, their rustling leaves a soft, collective sigh. Elara pulled Lena tighter, a sudden, cold dread blossoming in her chest. For a fleeting moment, she wondered if the forest itself was listening, waiting for a sound that would never come.

To be continued…..
