EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF OBANLIKU LGA, HON. SUNNY AYANG, LEADS PEACE INITIATIVE TO RESTORE HARMONY IN BALEGETTE COMMUNITIES
In a decisive demonstration of his unwavering commitment to sustainable peace, unity, and community development across Obanliku Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Amb. Chief (Dr) Sunny Ayang, JP, on Monday, 13th July, 2026, convened a high-level peace and reconciliation meeting with traditional rulers, elders, opinion leaders, stakeholders, women, and youth representatives of the Balegette community.
The strategic meeting was convened following the unfortunate communal unrest that erupted last week as a result of a land ownership dispute involving the Umboli, Omoni, Akemen, and Elumusor communities and the Nzosor community of Balegette in Becheve ward. The conflict resulted in the destruction of properties and threatened the long-standing peaceful coexistence among the affected communities.
Determined to prevent further escalation and restore lasting harmony, the Executive Chairman facilitated extensive dialogue among all parties. Through frank discussions, mutual understanding, and a collective commitment to peace, far-reaching resolutions were reached to address the root causes of the crisis and establish practical measures aimed at preventing future occurrences.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Sunny Ayang emphasized that peace remains the bedrock of development, assuring the people that his administration will continue to prioritize dialogue, justice, and inclusive leadership in resolving disputes across the Local Government Area. He urged all stakeholders to embrace forgiveness, uphold the resolutions reached, and work together to preserve the unity and progress that have long characterized the Balegette communities.
The peace meeting was attended by key government officials and security stakeholders, including the Vice Chairman of Council, Hon. Amb. Glory Awowoh; the Leader of Council, Hon. Sunday Elam; the Secretary of Council, Dr. Joseph Agba; the Special Adviser on Peace and Security, Supol Cyprian Ukupa; the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Obanliku Division, CSP Lifu; Barr. Pius Awah; and the Director of Security Operations (DSO) of Council, Mr. Mathias Agba.
The Balegette community delegation was led by Dr. Anya Esalo and Mr. Sunday Egunu, alongside respected traditional rulers, elders, opinion leaders, women leaders, and youth representatives from the various communities.
The successful engagement marks yet another milestone in the peacebuilding efforts of the Sunny Ayang administration and reinforces the Local Government's commitment to ensuring that every community enjoys an atmosphere of security, justice, and peaceful coexistence.
As Obanliku continues its journey toward sustainable development, the Executive Chairman reaffirmed that his administration remains steadfast in promoting dialogue over conflict, unity over division, and development over discord.
Peace is the foundation upon which progress is built, and together, the people of Obanliku will continue to protect and strengthen that foundation.
