Cross River gorilla 🦍

The Cross River gorilla Gorilla gorilla diehli is the most endangered of 4 gorilla sub-species and is classified as Critically Endangered.

Found only in a small area in the mountainous headwaters of the Cross River straddling the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Threatened by habitat loss and forest fragmentation as well as occasional hunting, fewer than 300 survive across the landscape. Cross River gorillas are very rare and seldom seen. Evidence of their continued existence comes mainly from the ‘nests’ which they construct each night to sleep in, and from camera traps 📸

helps to protect Cross River gorillas at 3 sites in Nigeria (all in Cross River State): Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mbe Mountains, and the Okwangwo Division of Cross River National Park.
