VATICAN RELEASES OFFICIAL FUNERAL DETAILS FOR POPE FRANCIS

In a moment that marks the close of an era and the opening of a sacred chapter in ecclesiastical memory, the Vatican has officially announced the details of the Funeral Mass of His Holiness, Pope Francis, the 266th Successor of St. Peter and Bishop of Rome. The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 am, in St. Peter’s Square, at the heart of Vatican City, ushering in the revered Novendiales—nine days of mourning, prayer, and liturgical commemoration in the Roman Catholic tradition.

This historic liturgy will be celebrated in accordance with the rubrics of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis (nn. 82–109), and presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, a distinguished figure in the life of the Church whose ecclesiastical and pastoral legacy spans continents and pontificates.

In true reflection of the universal character of the Church, concelebrating clerics from around the world—Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Priests—are invited to participate, vested according to their rank and in strict adherence to the liturgical requirements:

- Patriarchs and Cardinals are to gather in the Chapel of St. Sebastian by 9:00 a.m., vested in their white damasked mitres, the traditional insignia of episcopal purity and unity with the Holy See.

- Archbishops and Bishops are to report at the Constantine Wing by 8:30 AM, bearing the amice, alb, girdle, and simple white mitre—symbols of their apostolic calling.

- Priests, the foot soldiers of the faith across parishes and dioceses, are expected in St. Peter’s Square by 8:30 a m., vested with amice, alb, girdle, and red stole—the mark of priestly identity and sacrificial ministry.

Following the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Final Commendation and Valedictory will be offered—a moment of spiritual grandeur when the Church, as Bride of Christ, entrusts her earthly shepherd into the arms of the Divine Shepherd. In a solemn procession of universal resonance, the body of Pope Francis will then be brought into St. Peter’s Basilica, and subsequently translated to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he will be laid to rest beneath the gaze of the Blessed Virgin Mary—whose maternal intercession he frequently invoked.

In keeping with the directives of Motu Proprio Pontificalis Domus, members of the Pontifical Chapel wishing to attend the liturgy without concelebrating must request an official Notification by contacting [email protected]. Attendance demands punctuality and adherence to proper choir dress, with all participants expected to arrive by 9:00.a.m. for placement by the papal masters of ceremonies.

A Global Gathering at the Heart of the Church

From Rome to Rio, from Buenos Aires to Benin, from Port Harcourt to the plains of Assisi, the world now gathers spiritually at the altar of history. The passing of Pope Francis, a pontiff whose papacy was defined by humility, fraternity, ecological consciousness, and a radical re-centering of the poor, leaves behind a legacy that will echo far beyond the colonnades of St. Peter’s Square.

This reporter joins the faithful of Nigeria, the African continent, and the entire Catholic world in prayerful vigil, awaiting the sacred rites that will commend this Servant of the Servants of God to his eternal reward.
