Does This Make Sense?

You want to build a house worth ₦250 million.

And you expect me, a structural engineer, to take responsibility for it, responsibility that if anything happens to that structure, I may be forced to refund, lose my license, face jail, or watch my name and career scattered.

Yet, all you can offer me for this level of accountability is ₦100,000?

Does that make sense?

Is a structural engineer not a profession in this country? Do we look like we are cheap? If we were not that important, we would not be the ones required by law to sign off on buildings, accepting full liability for their safety.

All you think about is “₦100,000 for drawing.” But do you think about the involvement, the responsibility, the expertise, and the risk we carry on our shoulders?

Your lawyer can collect ₦10 million for a commission on the #100 million worth of land as 10 percent , and you think ₦100,000 is enough for a structural engineer? Think again.

Civil and structural engineering is not just another profession. It is the foundation of every other profession in the building industry. We are the backbone, the mother and father of all.

Anyone giving you drawings for such small fees is not a structural engineer. They are merely imitating and if anything happened to that your building , you will be blamed .

Respect the profession.
Respect the responsibility.
Respect the value we bring.

When purchasing reinforcement bars (rebars), you may notice significant price variations for the same size. For instance, 16mm TMT rebars can cost around ₦20,500, while others of the same size are priced at ₦16,500. Similarly, 12mm TMT rebars may cost ₦11,800, while others are sold for ₦9,500. Clients often overlook these differences, opting for the cheaper option. However, the cheaper alternatives are usually HYSD (High Yield Strength Deformed) rebars, such as IGS and YF5. In contrast, the more expensive ones are TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) rebars.

Salespeople often attribute the difference to government approval, stating that TMT rebars are approved while HYSD rebars are not. But what makes TMT rebars government-approved? One key reason is that TMT rebars possess higher tensile strength, making them a superior choice for construction projects.

TMT rebars offer several advantages over HYSD rebars:

1. Higher Tensile Strength: TMT rebars can withstand greater loads and stresses.
2. Flexibility: TMT rebars are more flexible and less brittle, allowing them to bend without breaking and return to their original shape.
3. Corrosion Resistance: TMT rebars are less prone to rust and corrosion.
4. Fire Resistance: TMT rebars have higher fire resistance, maintaining their structural integrity for longer periods.

While TMT rebars may seem costlier initially, their durability and longevity make them a more cost-effective choice in the long run. With TMT rebars, you can:

1. Extend Column Spacing: Wider spacing is possible, reducing material costs.
2. Increase Building Lifespan: TMT rebars remain strong and durable over time.

Ultimately, the choice between TMT and HYSD rebars depends on your specific needs and priorities, This post aims to inform, not dictate, your decision on purchasing rebars.
