A woman has been elected as the leader of the Anglican church worldwide.
She is Dame Sarah Elizabeth Mullally, a former Nurse turned Bishop, thereby making her the 1st woman to occupy the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury, in the history of the Anglican church.
Elizabeth Mullally, who has been serving as Bishop of London since 2018, emerged the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury following the approval of the crown nomination commission and confirmation by the monarch.
Born in Surrey, England, in 1962, Elizabeth Mullally trained as a nurse and rose to become the chief nursing officer for England before turning to priesthood.
She was ordained a priest in 2001, consecrated a bishop in 2015, and appointed Bishop of London in December 2017. She has also served as Dean of the Royal Chapel of England since 2019.
