Communities Appeal for Govt Intervention over Gully Erosion Threats to lives, Property

The people of Amamba, Ngwu, Amankwo, Agbazu and Eluama in Uzuakoli, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, have raised alarm over the devastating impact of gully erosion, which has destroyed storey buildings, bungalows and farmlands while posing a serious threat to lives and property.

The affected communities appealed to the Federal Government, Abia State Government and Bende Local Government Council to urgently intervene and save residents from the worsening environmental disaster.

Those who spoke included the President General of Amamba Community, Hon. Sir Nelson Umezurike, the President General of Eluama Community, Onyebinanma Sunday Onyebinanma, as well as victims Chisaraokwu Onyeanusi, Okechukwu Nwosu and Mrs. Ihekwumere Nnenneya Chikereze.

Speaking to the press at the erosion sites, the community leaders clarified that their gathering was not a protest but an appeal aimed at drawing the attention of government and relevant agencies to the magnitude of the crisis.

"We are not protesting. What we are doing is using this opportunity to draw the attention of government to the frustration we are facing. If we wanted to protest, we would have gone to the main road," Umezurike said.

The communities commended members of the media for visiting the affected areas, expressing hope that extensive coverage would help attract urgent government intervention.

According to Umezurike, the affected area was originally planned as a residential layout where many residents had already built their homes before the erosion began. He explained that the community initially spent more than ₦7 million on temporary erosion control measures, but the intervention was washed away within weeks by heavy floodwaters.

He blamed the worsening erosion on poor drainage construction by contractors that handled an internal road project, alleging that the drainage channel was terminated without being connected to the proper discharge point despite their appeal.

"When we asked the contractors to connect the drainage to the appropriate discharge channel, our efforts yielded no result. That marked the beginning of this disaster," he said.

He further disclosed that in 2019, residents contributed over ₦60 million for another erosion control project after seven houses had already collapsed. However, the intervention also failed because of the overwhelming volume of floodwater.

Umezurike alleged that another road contractor later repeated the same mistake on a different section of the community by leaving drainage channels unconnected despite repeated appeals for corrective measures, thereby worsening the erosion.

Umezurike acknowledged the efforts of political leaders, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Governor Alex Otti through his representatives, and the member representing the area in the Abia State House of Assembly, for drawing attention to the problem.

IKPEAZU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE KINGDOM OF SPAIN, COMMENCES OFFICIAL DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENTS

The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has marked another significant milestone in its diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Spain as Nigeria's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, His Excellency Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, formally presented copies of his credentials to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid. The ceremony, conducted in accordance with established diplomatic protocol, officially authorizes the Nigerian envoy to commence diplomatic engagements with the Spanish Government pending the presentation of his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain. Ambassador Ikpeazu was accompanied by the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Madrid, Ambassador Ferdinand Nwoye, and the Embassy's Consul, Mrs. Binta Dala, M.C., while the Nigerian delegation was received by Ambassador Adrián Martín Couce on behalf of the Spanish Government.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Ikpeazu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between both countries. He expressed optimism that his tenure would usher in a new era of expanded cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy, technology, tourism, education, agriculture, and cultural exchange. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships capable of driving sustainable economic growth, promoting innovation, and creating greater opportunities for the peoples of both nations. According to the Ambassador, the presentation of his credentials symbolizes not only the commencement of his diplomatic assignment but also the shared determination of Nigeria and Spain to deepen collaboration across critical sectors.

The presentation of copies of credentials represents an important diplomatic procedure preceding the formal presentation of Letters of Credence to the Head of State, after which an ambassador fully assumes all official responsibilities. With this milestone successfully concluded, Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is expected to intensify high-level diplomatic engagements aimed at advancing Nigeria's foreign policy objectives, promoting economic diplomacy, and strengthening bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Spain. His appointment underscores Nigeria's unwavering commitment to constructive international engagement, strategic cooperation, and the pursuit of partnerships that will deliver lasting prosperity and shared progress for both nations.

*ABIA STATE POLICE COMMAND RAIDS CRIMINAL HIDEOUTS APPREHENDS 31 SUSPECTS FOR POSSESSION OF SUSPECTED ILLICIT HARD DRUGS DESTROYS HIDEOUTS*

30 male suspects aged between 22–46 years and 1 female suspect.

1. In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa to strategic Officers of the Command and following the ongoing Command’s clearance operational strategies and sustained raids on criminal hideouts across the State, the Command has intensified efforts to take the fight to criminal enclaves.

2. Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Central Police Station, (CPS Umuahia) in collaboration with community vigilantes, carried out coordinated raids on identified black spots within the Mission Hill/New Road axis, in an area popularly known as “Down Below.” This location is an obscure area characterized by a deep valley stretching into the bush. Another criminal hideout at Amuzukwu, known for drug bunkering and a refuge for criminals, was also successfully raided.

3. During the operation, a total of 30 male suspects and 1 female suspect were apprehended, while various substances suspected to be illicit hard drugs were recovered.

4. Furthermore, on 01/07/2026, following sustained intelligence, the same areas were revisited. Several huts and makeshift camps used as safe havens by criminals for concealment and sale of illicit drugs were identified. About eight (8) tents and camps constructed with baboon sticks and tarpaulin materials were destroyed and burnt to ashes to dislodge the criminal syndicates and disrupt their activities. All suspects have been charged to court and remanded at the correctional service.

5. The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to its constitutional duties and zero tolerance to crime and criminality. He assured that Abia State will remain unsafe for criminals and emphasized that the Command will continue to review and implement improved operational strategies to ensure the continuous safety of all residents, as the fight against crime will be taken directly to the criminal enclaves.
