🌸Here Allah tells His Messenger to command the believing women -especially his wives and daughters, because of their position of honor -to draw their Jilbabs over their bodies, so that they will be distinct in their appearance from the women of the Jahiliyyah and from slave women.

🌸Allah commanded the believing women, when they went out of their houses for some need, to cover their faces from above their heads with the Jilbab, leaving only one eye showing. (Tafsir ibn kathir),

Narrated 'Aishah (radhi-yAllahu 'anhaa]: "May Allah bestow His Mercy on the early emigrant women. When Allah revealed: 'And to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks, and bosoms)' -- they tore their Muruts (a woollen dress, or a waist-binding cloth or an apron) and covered their heads and faces with those torn Muruts." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Wearing hijab oppresses women.

But the notion that wearing a headscarf is inherently oppressive ignores the agency of the person who dons it. Third-wave feminism holds that women should get to choose which practices are best for them without having to contend with anybody else’s expectations. That, not an uncovered head, is what liberation looks like. What’s more, compulsory uncovering has been, in different times and places, a tool of oppression. Secular governments around the world (including in Muslim-majority countries) have forced women to bare their heads to attend school or hold public office, or sometimes even to just walk in the streets: Near the end of Iran’s monarchy, in an effort to mimic Western societies, “traditional dress styles were discouraged,” according to a history from the University of Central Florida. In Turkey, for decades, wearing headscarves in government offices was banned. to promote secularization. Today, France infamously imposes legal restriction on wearing hijab. Against that history, voluntarily covering oneself can be an act of empowerment, not subjugation.
