We shifted from a 1000 sqft apartment to a 470 sqft apartment ... and our life got better!
The thought of having our own home came from the desire to design & modify our space to our liking. The asking price for a flat, matching our current rented apartment size of 1000 sqft, was nearly one crore. But the realization that this is the age and time to have sufficient money to ensure quality life, and not during our senescence, led us to the search for a low-cost, compact home. We found a suitable project of 470 sqft in a peaceful locality at last—a 2bhk apartment for 35 Lakhs. Even though slightly higher than our set budget, this would avoid putting a giant hole in our monthly earnings for loan repayments.
We had our share of anxiety in shifting to a space that is less than half of what we were staying at. As a prep, we started clearing things from our home that we had not used in six months. We consciously reduced our online buying sprees too. Life was beginning to become lighter and clearer. We shifted to our new home on Jan 1st. Considering our nature, the enthusiasm to keep stuff in order would likely fizz out in a week or two. But things turned out to be just the opposite. Even after three months, our space remains neat and organized because everything in the house is within easy reach. Organizing and tidying is not a time-consuming, disheartening endeavor anymore. Seeing the house clutter-free even after three months is a surprise for us. It took weeks before we noticed and took care of misplaced or left unattended items in the previous houses. Tending to this accumulated clutter once in a while was a real task. Now, things can be kept back in place when they get disorganized. Also, the habit of hoarding stuff that is of no use now, just because it was expensive or thinking it may become useful later in life, has almost ended. Our stance is that our home will contain only stuff that we know is adding to our quality of life. Since we stayed clear of overspending on a big house, we could afford to design and curate our compact home to our hearts' content, which is a big plus.
It can be argued that decluttering could have been done in the previous house itself, or that a part of the house could be kept empty if organizing was becoming difficult, etc. But the truth is, without a forceful external trigger, it is tough for a spontaneous lifestyle change to happen in our lives. Long story short, our downsizing from 1000 to 470 has ended up sorting our life for the good!
