Hello Contribute family.

We apologize that it has been a bit quiet here for a while, but now we have a great update! :)

As you know, Contribute Water has been supporting the delivery of water, sanitation and hygiene behaviours at a pre-school nursery in Fanuwelo (Malawi). Last time we told you about the impact of the pump and safe water delivered through your support. This update focuses on the toilets and hand-washing facilities!

Before the support from Contribute Water, there were no toilets or hand-washing facilities available to the 75 children attending the Fanuwelo pre-school. Open defecation was a common practice and children would eat food without washing their hands, leading to diarrhea and stunting.

At least 5 children previously suffered from diarrhea a week. This would result in their absence from pre-school, missing lessons and falling behind peers in terms of educational attainment. Parents were also having to spend a high proportion of, their often limited, income on medicine.

Since the installation of toilets and hand-washing facilities, cases of diarrhea have reduced, and children no longer miss school. They can instead attend and learn, use the toilets followed by washing their hands with clean, safe water, as well as hand-washing before and after eating.
