Construction of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge began on this day in 1959.

When it opened to traffic 5 years later, connecting New York City boroughs Staten Island and Brooklyn, its 4,260-foot central span made it the world's longest suspension bridge. To account for the Earth's curvature over that distance, the bridge’s 693-foot towers were built 1 5/8 inches farther apart at the top than at the base. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together by 3 million rivets and one million bolts.

Today the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge ranks as the 20th longest main span in the world.
