Thanlyin City : Overview
Thanlyin (Syriam) Thanlyin was an important Port City of Ancient Mon Dynasty and Trading Center from the 14th century to the 17th century and the earliest Portuguese establishment by Portuguese mercenary Filipe de Brito in the early 16th century. The colonial town of Syriam was built by the British for its port and petroleum refinery plant. It is also a sub-urban town right a few miles away from Yangon across two bridges. Today, Thanlyin is home to local universities as well as its Thilawa port is still serving as the largest and busiest port in the country which handles the container ships and oil tankers. Indeed, excursion to Thanlyin will give you a chance to see a sub-urban town near Yangon and a taste of country-side as the town itself is old and interesting.
