Myanmar's Arabica Awakening: From Missionaries to Specialty Star
Myanmar's coffee scene is young but buzzing with potential, especially its Arabica from misty highlands. It's a tale of resilient farms, political twists, and a specialty revival.
Humble Roots
Coffee hit Myanmar in the late 1800s via British colonials and missionaries. Robusta started in the south, but Arabica shone from the 1930s in Southern Shan State, Northern Shan State, and Pyin Oo Lwin. Key spot: Chaungwe plantation (1930s), still brewing today.
Perfect Highland Fit
Arabica thrives in cooler elevations like Shan State and Mandalay. The 1980s brought boosts with disease-resistant Catimor and Catuai, blending old-school charm with modern yields.
Top Varieties on the Scene
Bourbon & Typica: Classic, flavor-packed profiles.
Catuai & Caturra: Reliable producers.
Catimor: Yield king with rust resistance.
S795 & SL34: Hybrids for quality and grit.
These shape everything from cup notes to farm survival.
From Slump to Surge
Post-independence isolation sidelined coffee, but recent government pushes, farmer programs, and the 2014 Myanmar Coffee Association sparked a comeback. Now, highland Arabica from Shan and Mandalay is earning specialty buzz with better processing.
Why It Brews Bright
Myanmar's Arabica blends history, adaptation, and rural hope. For buyers and cuppers, it's an emerging origin with nuanced flavors and huge upside—heritage meets innovation.
Next stop? Refined quality and global shelves.

When it comes to drying in coffee processing, drying temperature and relative humidity are both critical for quality of green beans.
For a coffee processor, the hard work didn’t end after fermentation. Every step is crucial for us. 💪🏻
