There have been two other times in Grace’s life when she tried to hit me. One was last summer when she wanted to keep looking at a school bus, but it was time to leave the parking lot.

The other was when she wanted something that wasn’t available. In both situations, what Grace really needed to learn was how to accept “no” or wait—just like in the video I shared.

I’m a firm believer in proactive strategies, and if you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m constantly talking about them.

But here’s the thing: proactive strategies can only take you so far if you don’t pair them with effective responses in the moment.

It’s important to remember that not all challenging behavior calls for the same blanket response.

Treating every instance of hitting the same way could not only be ineffective but might even make the behavior worse.

If you want to create meaningful, lasting behavior change, the key is understanding WHY the behavior is happening in the first place. That’s where true problem-solving begins.
