The Generation Defeating Poverty, inc. (GDPI) is a registered civil society organization in Liberia, established in 2021. GDPI is committed to advocacy for human rights - including women's rights - and respect for rule of law, and promoting livelihood opportunities for youth and young women through agriculture and entrepreneurship development. As part of its environmental programa, the organization aspires to undertake advocacy and initiatives to promote clean environment through effective and efficient waste management programs.
As a right-based and advocacy organization, GDPI welcomes the new Government of Liberia's decision, under the captaincy of President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., to establish the long-awaited War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia. The heinous crimes committed during the 14-year civil war resulted into loss of lives of over 250,000 Liberains and mass exodus of more than half a million Liberians were forced into exile in refugee camps in neighboring counties and/or internally displaced camps.
No doubt, the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court will bring a closure to the practice of impunity and justice for decades by identifying, prosecuting, and punishing those found guilty of these crimes.
GDPI will definitely work with government and its partners to create the awareness and sensitization of the Liberian public the importance of the War and Economic Crimes Court and all processes leading to the work of the Court. We call on all Liberians and our international partners to support this political will of the government to ensure those who bear the greatest responsibilities of the war are punished.
