Living Continuum – Malabe, Sri Lanka | By D S M A

Living Continuum by DSMA explores the seamless relationship between living and creative practice within a compact urban site. Designed as both a residence and a design studio, the project reflects a flexible architectural approach where daily life, work, and gathering coexist naturally.

Organized around a series of courtyards and open-to-sky spaces, the design brings natural light, ventilation, and greenery deep into the interior, creating a calm and climate-responsive environment. The architects also emphasize material honesty by incorporating reused and locally available materials, forming a simple yet resilient architectural language.

Through its adaptable spatial planning and thoughtful integration of nature, DSMA creates more than a house or studio—Living Continuum becomes a living framework that supports everyday life, creativity, and collaboration.

Bothale Pahala Walawwa, located in Bothale, Mirigama, Sri Lanka, is a historic manor house believed to be over 150 years old. Once owned by former Brigadier Jayawardana, the walawwa preserves a rich legacy through its collection of antique furniture and a pair of traditional carts estimated to be more than a century old. Reflecting the timeless character of Sri Lankan monsoon architecture, the residence features a beautiful internal courtyard that brings light, air, and rain into the heart of the home. Renovation work has recently begun under the ownership, with the hope that the restoration will carefully preserve the walawwa’s historic and cultural value for future generations.
