While most solar panels sleep after sunset, Stanford scientists have flipped the script. Led by Professor Shanhui Fan, a team has developed special panels that generate electricity at night by capturing the heat that Earth naturally radiates into space. This process, known as radiative cooling, creates a temperature difference that a thermoelectric generator can convert into power—even without sunlight.
Currently, these panels produce modest energy—around 50 milliwatts per square meter—just enough to power small devices like LED lights or environmental sensors. But in remote or off-grid locations, that’s a huge breakthrough. It signals a future where solar panels could provide round-the-clock clean energy—day or night, rain or shine.
