St. Mary's College Mourns The Passing Of Cricket Icon And Proud Marian, Mr. Merill Perera | St. Mary's College Dehiwala It is with profound sadness that St. Mary's College, Dehiwala, announces the passing of one of its most distinguished alumni, Mr. Merill Perera, who left us

WHEN THE MARIANS OUT-BOXED THE OPPOSITION WITH CLASS AND STYLE 12/06/2025

No other college in the annals of Ceylon and then Sri Lanka Schools Boxing has dominated the L.V. Jayaweera, Novices, YMCA, Youth & Junior and Stubbs Shield tournaments like the St. Mary's College, Dehiwela boys - from the mid-1960s right through to the very late 1970s and 1980s.

Brothers always held sway at St. Mary's College Dehiwela. The Burghers in particular were known for their guts and glory as the Marians were a cut above the rest of the crop in the Sweet Science. They drew rave reviews and pulled in fans from around the country.

In an era where we saw the Van Cuylenbergs (Hans, Earnest and Bunty, their elder brother Winston Van Cuylenberg represented Ceylon at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics with Malcom Bulner), the De Zilwa's (Bernard and Merryl), the De Kauwe's (Chavo, Milan, Brindley and Dylan), Chavo won the Asian Championship silver medal for Sri Lanka way back in 1973), the Van Heer's (Godfrey, Adrian, Rodney and Gladstone), the Foulstone's (Desmond and Adrian), the Vanderwert's (Andre and Christopher) the Tissera's (Kevin, Dirk and Denham), the Daniel's (Andrew and Paul) the De Hoedt's (Frank and Brindley), the Mannan's (Razeen and Zain), and the Oorloffs (Trevine and Henry) to name just a few, were always a treat to watch.

There were others who went on to achieve greatness both for themselves and their Alma Mater - namely: the stylish Milroy Byrde, Marcian Steinwall (brother of former Mr. Ceylon, Ronnie Steinwall), Douglas Pereira, Elsworth Anthony Felsianes, Raymond Rodrigo, Wendell Mack, Lucien Jansz, Bandula Rathnapala, Sam De Zilva, Nigel Jansen, Vasantha Randanaya, Vasantha Perera, Eugene Van Rooyen, Kenham Berenger, M.L. Peiris, Kevin Elias, Carlyle Kennedy, Rohan Pathirana, Tony Quyn, Brindsley Jacob, Shamil Allang, Brandon Poulier, Darrel Henricus, Ray Rosairo, Norman Vittachi, Darrel Blackett, Nazli Farook, Kingsley Jesudason, Fazal Samsudeen, Denley Mathias, Patrick Rosairo, Andrew Noyhar, Leonard Vittachi, Kevin White, Angelo Jesudason, and Siraz Manzoor to name just a few.

There was also the power-house Sandy Kellar (Arethusa) who later fought for the Marian Club with great distinction. He later excelled in rugby for Havelocks and Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan Anchorman will be featuring St. Mary's College Dehiwela and their boxing teams during that golden era of the 1960s and 1970s in the near future...Stay tuned.
