One common mistake in research writing is saying:

“there is a gap in the literature”

But a gap is not just “I could not find many papers.”

A strong research gap should explain what exactly is missing.

Use this simple method:

1. Check the population
Who did past studies focus on?
Undergraduates? Employees? Teachers? Customers?
Your gap may be a less-studied group.

2. Check the context
Where were past studies done?
USA? UK? India? General global studies?
Your gap may be a country, industry, university type, or cultural context.

3. Check the method
Did most studies use surveys?
Did few studies use interviews, mixed methods, or longitudinal data?
Your gap may be methodological.

4. Check the variables
Did past studies ignore an important factor?
For example, they studied AI usage but not responsible use, citation behaviour, or writing confidence.

5. Write the gap clearly
Weak gap:
“Few studies were found.”

Better gap:
“Most studies focus on undergraduate students, while limited attention has been given to how MSc students use AI tools during thesis writing.”

Simple formula:

Past studies focused on ___, but limited research has examined ___ in ___. Therefore, this study focuses on ___.

That is how your research gap becomes clear and defendable.
