A meaningful discussion was held at the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government (ACLG) - Batticaloa, where participants from the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government (ACLG) - Batticaloa engaged in a dynamic conversation on the findings from the Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa project.

The session highlighted the critical role of informal waste collectors in waste recovery systems and circular economy development. Project partners SPM Foundation and LEF shared valuable insights, recommendations, and forward-thinking ideas for the next phase of this initiative aimed at strengthening inclusive waste management in the district. The conversation was received well by the government, and municipal councils were encouraged to start including informal waste sectors within their waste recovery in Batticaloa. This support is integral to driving meaningful and holistic waste management in cities.

Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa was conducted to develop a comparative understanding of the district’s existing waste management systems. Through a collaboration between Kabadiwalla Connect, .foundation.2024, and , the project carried out street-by-street surveys of small scrap shops, large informal waste workers, and processors across Batticaloa which generated critical insights into how the informal sector contributes to keeping our cities clean.

With support from Depeche Mode x Hublot through Conservation Collective, the initiative mapped supply chains to strengthen End Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks, acknowledge the largely unaccounted labour within informal economies, and identify opportunities to increase the recovery of discarded high-value plastics across the district.

Salvage City is an awareness campaign implemented as part of the Mapping of Informal Waste Management in Batticaloa, which was conducted to develop a comparative understanding of the district’s existing waste management systems.

Through collaboration between schools and neighbourhood scrap shops, the initiative diverts recyclable waste from landfills, protects local ecosystems, and teaches students how to separate, sort, and recycle at school and at home—while strengthening community recycling networks and empowering the next generation of environmental leaders.
