From Cattle Herds to Classrooms: The Inspiring Journey of Gatmuot

Six years ago, in a remote South Sudanese village, a young boy named Gatmuot took his first steps into school. But his dream of education was short-lived. His parents, like many in rural areas, believed cattle were the family’s greatest wealth. Four times, they forced him out of school to herd animals. Four times, he returned—each time more determined than before.

Three years later, Gatmuot’s journey led him to Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya. There, surrounded by thousands of displaced children, he re-enrolled in school. Yet he faced a new challenge: he could not speak or write in English. His silence became the target of mockery from classmates who believed he would never catch up.

But Gatmuot refused to be defined by their laughter. While others played football on the dusty camp grounds, he spent hours with worn-out notebooks, tracing letters, whispering words, and teaching himself in the shadows. Slowly, his silence turned into speech—and his speech into confidence.

Today, the same classmates who once mocked him now seek his help with assignments. Gatmuot has become a role model in Kakuma, encouraging younger children never to abandon their dreams.

“Don’t give up,” he tells them. “The struggle you face today may become the strength you use tomorrow.”

His story is not just about survival—it is about resilience, the power of education, and the belief that no matter where you begin, perseverance can carry you forward.
