If you are from Runda yaani Ruiru Ndani and you have been in Ruiru for sometimes you must have met a youth group by the name Focus. Here is the fruit of their work then.
THE STORY OF MARGARET WANGARI – FROM VULNERABILITY TO EMPOWERMENT
When Margaret Wangari first joined the Focus Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OvC) Program, she was about seven years old and had never stepped into a classroom. Life had already placed immense burdens on her young shoulders—she was an orphan living with her aging grandparents, who survived only through scarce and unreliable casual labor. To Margaret, education felt like a dream too far to reach.
But in the hearts of a small group of unemployed young people, a seed of compassion and determination had been planted. Though they had little themselves, they believed that every child deserves a chance to learn, to dream, and to live with dignity. They embraced Margaret through the Focus OvC Program. With their support, and that of generous partners, she was enrolled at Focus Nursery School. The school was run by youth who, though many lacked formal training in early childhood education, had an unshakable desire to support and empower children like Margaret. She was late to start schooling, but it was never too late for hope.
Margaret later joined Githunguri Primary School, where she studied diligently and completed her primary education. Against all odds, she excelled in her Grade 8 exams and secured a place at Komothai Secondary School. This achievement was only possible because the Focus team and their supporters refused to give up on her.
One of the greatest lifelines for Margaret and many others was the feeding program. Every day, Focus youth carried hot lunch to her and fellow learners. What started as a humble act of love has grown into a structured feeding program that still runs today at Githunguri Primary, supporting more than 150 learners. Such programs are vital—they not only keep children in school but also improve concentration, performance, and attendance. A hungry child cannot learn, but a nourished child can dream and thrive.
High school presented new challenges. Focus did not have enough funds to fully support Margaret and her peers through secondary school. Yet the youth did not relent. They knocked on doors, visited offices, and tirelessly sought bursaries to ensure no child under their care missed a class. Their persistence bore fruit. Margaret successfully completed her secondary education, laying a solid foundation for her future.
After high school, she was blessed with opportunities to work in several companies. Each small step built her confidence, strengthened her independence, and equipped her with the ability to make informed life choices.
Today, Margaret Wangari is a living testament to the power of education and community support. She is an empowered young woman, married, and blessed with two children whom she is able to care for independently. Even after the loss of her grandparents, she has remained resilient, drawing strength from the foundation laid for her years ago by the Focus family.
Her journey is more than personal triumph—it is proof that when a community, even one made up of struggling youth, comes together with compassion and vision, lives can be transformed. Education broke the cycle of poverty for Margaret, and now she is shaping a better future for her children. This is how societies change—not through miracles, but through love, sacrifice, and the courage to stand with the vulnerable.
We deeply appreciate all those who stood in the gap for Wangari: the unemployed youth who chose service over despair, the partners and sponsors who believed in her, and the wider Focus family who walked with her every step of the way. Their sacrifice not only transformed her life but also lit a beacon of hope for many other vulnerable children.
Yet, countless children like Wangari still wait for someone to believe in them. This is a call to the Church, to organizations, to government, and to society at large: let us invest in the education, health, and future of orphans and vulnerable children. When we support a child, we do more than change one life—we transform entire families, communities, and generations.
Education is the key. Compassion is the door. Together, they unlock a better future.
The seed that was planted years ago by unemployed youth—who had passion and goodwill but no financial muscle—has today become a strong pillar. Many people now stand tall because of an idea birthed and nurtured in the midst of struggle and lack. This should encourage the youth of today: do not fear starting small, even in the most challenging situations. What begins as a humble effort can grow into a movement that transforms lives and generations. FOCUS Dream Center FOCUS Community Based Organization Katuosis Trucking Joachim Wangui.
