One behavior that is commonly associated with autism is stimming, a term used to describe self-stimulatory behaviors.
Stimming includes repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that help individuals regulate sensory experiences or emotional states.
For autistic individuals, environments can sometimes feel overwhelming due to differences in sensory processing. Sounds, lights, textures, and social demands may create levels of stimulation that require additional regulation.
Stimming can help them manage this sensory input.
It is important to recognize that not all stimming is problematic. Many forms of stimming serve an important self-regulatory function and may help individuals remain calm, focused, or emotionally balanced.

A dysregulated child is a child whose emotional, sensory, or cognitive system is overwhelmed, making it difficult for them to manage their feelings, behavior, or responses to their environment.
When a child is dysregulated, their nervous system receives more stimulation or demands than it can process, which may lead to behaviors such as crying, screaming, withdrawal, aggression, or difficulty following instructions.
