Growing up in the village, I wore every hat.
Bassist. Keyboardist. Drummer. Guitarist. Vocal trainer. And by default, the sound technician. Because when you can play everything, you end up running everything.
Being a pastor's son meant the sound had to be right every Sunday. No excuses. That pressure taught me more than any classroom could.
Over the years I watched the same gaps repeat themselves across churches, events, and setups all over Kenya. Good people with the wrong gear, or the right gear used the wrong way. I knew what quality sound felt like. I knew what was missing. And I knew I could fix it.
That is why Zamar Audio Solutions was born.
I can smell bad sound. I know what works, where it works, and why. And more importantly, I can break it down so anyone can understand it. No jargon, no gatekeeping.
Professional audio made simple.
If you are running sound for a church, an event, or a studio in Kenya, this is built for you.

A mix that sounds great on headphones but bad in a car is one of the most common problems in audio mixing. It usually happens because headphones and car speakers reveal different issues in the mix.

1. Too Much or Too Little Bass

Headphones often exaggerate or isolate low frequencies, making the bass seem balanced. In a car, the cabin naturally boosts low-end frequencies, causing the mix to become boomy or muddy.

Solution:

Check your mix on multiple systems.
Use a spectrum analyzer to monitor low-end buildup.
High-pass instruments that don't need bass content.

2. Stereo Width Problems

Headphones provide extreme left-right separation. A wide stereo mix can sound exciting in headphones but may become unfocused or disappear in a car where speakers interact with the cabin.

Solution:

Frequently check your mix in mono.
Keep important elements (kick, bass, lead vocal) centered.

3. Midrange Imbalance

The human ear is most sensitive to midrange frequencies (around 1–5 kHz). Cars often expose harsh or recessed mids that headphones may hide.

Solution:

Pay special attention to vocal clarity.
Compare your mix to professional reference tracks.

4. Room Simulation Differences

Headphones bypass the room completely, while a car creates reflections from glass, seats, and hard surfaces. These reflections can dramatically change how frequencies are perceived.

Solution:

Use monitor speakers in addition to headphones.
Test your mix in several environments before finalizing.

5. Excessive Reverb

Reverb can sound beautiful on headphones because every detail is audible. In a car, too much reverb can make the mix sound distant and unclear.

Solution:

Reduce unnecessary reverb.
Ensure vocals remain upfront and intelligible.

6. Volume-Level Issues

Many people mix too loudly on headphones. At high volumes, your ears perceive bass and treble differently, leading to poor balance when played elsewhere.

Solution:

Mix at moderate levels.
Periodically lower the volume to check balance.

Professional Mixing Tip

Before releasing a mix, test it on:

Studio monitors
Headphones
Car speakers
Phone speaker
Bluetooth speaker

If the mix translates well across all of them, you have a strong, balanced mix.

A common rule among professional engineers: If it sounds great in a car, it will usually sound good almost everywhere else. The car is one of the toughest real-world listening environments for a mix.
