Do you know that only 8 percent of leaders..
..were considered "strategic leaders" in a study of 6000 leaders by PWC. That's a very, very low percentage.
So why is that cause for concern?
Because a strategic leader is someone who can take the organisation beyond the status quo and evolve it successfully in an ever-changing market and world.
In essence it's what determines your long-term success!
The graphic outlines how organisations can successfully develop more of them and here's my brief take on these based on working with customers across a broad range of industries in the past years:
1. DISTRIBUTE RESPONSIBILITY
We must delegate for people to grow. In doing so we need to create the conditions for the person to succeed through proper empowerment and support.
2. BE HONEST AND OPEN ABOUT INFORMATION
Transparency accelerates everything in an organisation. Information is never synonymous with power in stellar organisations.
3. CREATE MULTIPLE PATHS FOR RAISING AND TESTING IDEAS
Does your innovation come from multiple sources? If not it's time to rethink a how you capture and develop new ideas!
4. MAKE IT SAFE TO FAIL
This goes hand in hand with 3. If people fear failure, you will invariably remain stuck wherever you are. Show that you fail and that it's OK to do so, then people will do the same!
5. PROVIDE ACCESS TO OTHER STRATEGISTS
A client recently mentioned that they don't share enough between their leaders and cross pollinate their ideas. That's an easy thing to fix if you are disciplined enough to take the time for it!
6. DEVELOP OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCE-BASED LEARNING
Leadership programs that are a break from work don't help. In our programs, you work on your challenges and can apply what you learn instantly. That's the way people grow!
7. HIRE FOR TRANSFORMATION
When driving transformation that you have very little experience doing yourself, find people who have successfully done those significant changes before and have them help people grow and develop under them.
8. BRING YOUR WHOLE SELF TO WORK
There's only one you... If there are two distinct personas, you need to give that some serious thought!
9. FIND TIME TO REFLECT
This is rare for most people in business. Great leaders find then time to do so.
10. RECOGNIZE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AS AN ONGOING PRACTICE
It's ongoing and must continue even for the most senior leaders. If senior leaders are curious and learning.... Everyone else will follow suit. Lead by learning!!
Which one of these stand out for you. .
