How do you Prepare your Lab to handle Ebola?
The first step is ensuring your facility's physical infrastructure meets the required standards. Ebola virus is a Risk Group 4 pathogen, and all work must be conducted under the appropriate level of containment.
• Minimum Containment is BSL-3: Diagnostic samples must be handled in a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. If the goal is to grow or isolate the virus in culture, BSL-4 containment is mandatory .
• Inactivation as a Strategy: If a BSL-3 lab is not available, there is an alternative. You can safely handle samples in a BSL-2 lab only if the virus is first completely inactivated. This is done using specialized transport media containing guanidine salts, which kill the virus while preserving its genetic material for testing . This approach greatly reduces risk and removes the need for a strict cold chain .
• Facility Design: Field labs are often set up with strictly demarcated "hot," "warm," and "cold" zones to prevent contamination. The "hot zone" is where infectious samples are handled and full PPE is required, while administrative work occurs in the "cold zone"
