Here are the common signs that your birds are stressed:
Reduced feed intake – Birds eat less than usual.
Decreased water consumption – They drink less, or sometimes excessively if heat-stressed.
Panting or open-mouth breathing – A common sign of heat stress.
Drooping wings – Wings hang loosely from the body.
Lethargy – Birds appear weak, inactive, or sleepy.
Crowding or piling up – Often due to cold, fear, or poor lighting.
Feather pecking or cannibalism – Stress can trigger aggressive behavior.
Drop in egg production – Layers produce fewer eggs or lay poor-quality eggs.
Poor growth rate – Broilers gain weight more slowly than expected.
Noisy or restless behavior – Constant chirping, panic, or unusual movement.
Pale combs and wattles – May indicate poor health or prolonged stress.
Increased illness or mortality – Stressed birds are more susceptible to diseases.
Common causes of stress
Overcrowding
Excessive heat or cold
Poor ventilation
Sudden changes in feed or water
Rough handling
Predator attacks or loud noises
Transportation
Poor lighting management
Key message: Healthy birds are active, eat and drink normally, and behave calmly. Any sudden change in behavior or performance should be investigated promptly to prevent losses.

Here are some common signs that your poultry may be underfed:
Slow growth – Chicks or growers fail to reach the expected weight for their age.
Weight loss – Adult birds become noticeably thin, with prominent breastbones.
Low egg production – Layers lay fewer eggs, or stop laying altogether.
Small eggs – Eggs become smaller than normal.
Weakness and lethargy – Birds appear inactive, tired, and reluctant to move.
Constant hunger – Birds rush to feed aggressively and peck at litter, feathers, or non-food objects.
Poor feather quality – Feathers become dull, rough, or fall out more than usual.
Cannibalism and feather pecking – Hunger can make birds peck each other.
Stunted development – Young birds remain undersized compared to healthy flockmates.
Poor immunity – Birds become more susceptible to diseases and recover slowly.
How to prevent underfeeding
Provide the correct amount of feed for the birds' age and production stage.
Ensure all birds have enough feeder space so weaker birds can eat.
Supply clean drinking water at all times.
Use a balanced, high-quality poultry feed.
Monitor body condition and adjust feeding if birds are losing weight.
Key reminder: Underfeeding doesn't always mean you're giving too little feed. It can also happen if feed quality is poor, feeders are overcrowded, birds have parasites or disease, or dominant birds prevent weaker ones from eating.
