Assam & Meghalaya share a 885-km boundary.

In July last year, Assam's Cachar district saw a violent, armed clash with the police personnel of Mizoram; six Assamese police personnel were martyred in this armed confrontation.

Assam has boundary disputes with not only Meghalaya, but also Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland - states that were carved out of Assam.

Three regional committees prepared the draft resolution (on January 29 this year), based on recommendations of regional panels, proposing division of the disputed 36.79 sq. km land in six areas - Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata and Ratacherra.

Assam will get 18.51 sq. km and Meghalaya will get the remaining 18.28 sq.km.

Assam CM and Meghalaya CM , signed this historic agreement in the presence of Home Minister .

It is said that 70% of the boundary dispute has been resolved.

There are 36 villages in these six sectors that cover an area of 36.79 sq. km. Villagers in certain disputed areas say they didn’t get to voice their opinions and that the regional committees didn’t take all their opinions into consideration.

This agreement is another step forward in establishing a more harmonious and peaceful North East.

Meghalaya was formed on 21 January 1972; the districts of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia Hills (previously part of Assam) became the new state of Meghalaya, with Shillong as its capital city.
