"Find someone easier," people said. I chose the boy with darker skin and Sam became the light I was missing. When I told my mom, she begged me to stop. "People won't understand. You'll get hurt," she said. But my heart had already chosen. At the orphanage, a boy sat on the cold floor, fixing a toy with tape. Dark skin. Big eyes that didn't trust. The worker whispered, "He doesn't talk much. He doesn't expect to leave." I knelt down. "Hey, Sam," I said. A moment passed. Then a small hand reached out and touched my sleeve. That single touch changed everything. The first night, Sam lined up shoes by the door ready to run. I left the light on. Just in case. Weeks later, laughter filled that same room. Strangers stared in grocery aisles. One woman asked, "Are you sure he's yours?" | smiled. "More than you could ever know." Years went fast. Now Sam drives me to the clinic. Reminds me to eat. Covers me with a blanket when I fall asleep on the couch. The boy the world didn't want became the one who keeps me alive.
