Google to replace Nexus line with Android Silver: Report....
NEW DELHI: Google may be planning to kill the Nexus line soon in a bid to focus more on the top-end segment with the upcoming Android Silver range. According to a report by TheInformation.com, Google plans to offer a premium Android experience with Silver line of products, starting with the US.
"The expensive effort involves dumping the Nexus phone brand in favour of a new programme called Silver, under which manufacturers and wireless carriers will be paid to produce and sell high-end devices that closely adhere to Google specifications, according to four people briefed on the project," the report claims.
The internet titan will severely restrict the number of non-Google apps pre-installed on Android Silver products, in a bid to crack down on bloatware. As per Google's mandate, if carriers and manufacturers choose to put their apps on these handsets, users must be able to uninstall them. At present, apps preloaded by manufacturers and carriers cannot be uninstalled unless the device is rooted.
Android Silver products will also get prompt software updates and will have top-end features like advanced voice recognition and water resistance. These features will help position it better against other top-end devices like iPhones and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, which dominate the US market.
In a way, these rumoured Android Silver products will be similar to Google Play Edition devices, which include some of the top devices by manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and LG but without any software customizations.
Google Play Edition devices feature stock Android software, but are still sold with the branding of the manufacturer — like Samsung, HTC and Sony — not Google. Instead, Android Silver devices are expected to carry Google's branding, not the manufacturer's.
Unlike Google Play Edition and Nexus products, Android Silver devices will be heavily promoted by the internet search giant. The report, citing four sources at the company, says that Google will spend up to $1 billion on marketing this upcoming range.
In the US, both Nexus and Google Play Edition devices are available only via the company's online store; Google Play Edition devices are not sold outside the US. However, Google will reportedly set up kiosks at telecom carriers' stores to market Android Silver devices, with especially trained employees showing top features to prospective buyers.
The report says that Google has already roped in LG and Motorola to produce the first Android Silver devices. Other potential partners in this programme are said to be Chinese companies looking to pe*****te the high-end smartphone market of the US. Samsung, HTC and Sony are, however, still not convinced to join the programme.
This is not the first time that rumours about Google killing the Nexus line have surfaced on the internet. In January this year, a Russian tech blogger tweeted that the Nexus line will be replaced by Google Play Edition products in 2015.
It is not yet clear if and when the Android Silver programme will be rolled out in markets like India and Brazil, where telecom carriers do not subsidize smartphones.

Microsoft takes Iowa from corn to .com
Fiber, low-cost power has Microsoft building nearly 1.5M square-feet of data center space
Computerworld - Star Trek fans know that Capt. James T. Kirk will eventually be born in Iowa. So, in one respect, this state already has a notable tech reputation.
Now, it has another.
Microsoft is building some 1.16 million square feet of new data center space, Iowa officials said Friday. This is Microsoft's second data center in West Des Moines.
Microsoft's other data center, which is being expanded, is now at about 300,000 square feet, said Clyde Evans, West Des Moines' director of community and economic development. It's also about 7 miles away from the planned facility.
State officials put Microsoft's total investment in their state at more than $2 billion. It will also cement Iowa's reputation as a data center hub state.
The primary reason Microsoft and others including Google and Facebook are interested in Iowa, said Evans, is that the state sits stop some major transcontinental fiber routes. It also has low electric power rates, which for a large user, may be 3 cents to 4 cents per kWh.
Something else that may have appealed to Microsoft, said Evans, is an investment by utility MidAmerican Energy in wind energy, which has made it one of the largest wind power generators in the U.S.
For all its size, the Microsoft data center will only employ about 80 people. Data centers, generally, are not big job generators. But the jobs they do create "tend to be very well paying," said Evans.
But data centers have very high property tax valuation, "and they are not a big drain on municipal services, they are not big users of police, fire, EMS or public works services," said Evans. "They are a kind of cash positive operation for the community."
Large data centers, which are used to support cloud operations, tend to cluster. Facebook opened a data center in Altoona, Iowa and Google has spent more than $1 billion in data center development so far in that state. North Carolina is another state that has drawn sizeable data center development.

About Computer Viruses....
The first virus on the arpanet in early 1970 was creeper virus. It was created by Bob Thomas at BBN technologies. It was an experimental self replicating program.
The first virus that came into wild was elk cloner virus. This virus was created by Richard Skrenta in 1981 when he was a student in high school. He created it as a joke and inserted it in a game on a floppy disk. The elk cloner virus get activated on its 50th use and displays a poem "Elk Cloner: The program with a personality."
Farooq Alvi Brothers of Lahore,Pakistan created the first pc virus in 1986.It was a boot sector virus.
The term virus to denote a self replicating program was first used in 1969 in a short story of a Galaxy Magaine written by David Gerrold.
The first windows virus was WinVer 1.4 and the first virus to attack .exe file was Groove.
Do you know 70% virus writers work under contract for the Organised crime syndicates.
The first antivirus program used wildly was Bernd Fix in 1987.Though there are many confusions about it.
Many antivirus companies use Fred Cohen's strategies to remove virus.Fred Cohen published one of the first academic papers on viruses in 1984.
John McAfee and Eugene Kaspersky, the founders of the most famous anti virus companies started mailing list to remove viruses before they founded McAfee and Kaspersky anti virus software.
