Question - What is the best method to prepare for judicial exams?

Answer - There is no need to prepare separately for prelims and main exam if you start preparing in the following manner:

1) Develop habit of studying law primarily from Bare Acts. Take help of text/reference books to note down the essentials of legal provision and the leading cases, if any, for each essential. Read carefully the explanation and proviso attached to the main provision. Illustrations appended to the Sections are very important for clearly understanding the provision and exceptions, so never miss them. Simultaneously, try to memorize ‘which Section deals with what’, this is very important for cracking prelims. However, it may be a difficult task but it must be done at least for all the important provisions.

2) Prepare brief notes of every important topic writing down the legal provisions involved, its essentials, leading cases and exceptions. Try to make it as concise as you can. These notes will prove to be most useful asset for quick revision at the time of prelim and main exams because by going through these short notes you recollect almost all the relevant information which you had studied earlier. Failure to revise the stuff at the eve of examination causes severe damage to your prospects of selection.

3) Keep with you the syllabus and the previous year papers and do a research to understand the pattern of asking questions. This will give you the insight which area of study you need to focus more. But at the same time do not waste your time making guesses on the basis of previous papers as to which topics are most likely to be asked in coming exam. The questions may or may not be repeated in the next exam.

4) When you are close to main examination, start practice of writing answers of previously asked questions with strict adherence to the calculated time for each part and sub-part of the question. The method of calculating time is very simple: For example, if the exam paper is of 100 marks and the total time is three hours (180 minutes) then for writing answer of one mark you get the time of 180/100 minutes which is equal to 1.8 minutes. So if you are attempting a question of 10 marks you should complete your answer in 18 minutes. However, it’s a wise idea to manage your time in such a way that you get some time to review all your answers before submitting the answer sheet.
