বাঙালি চিরকালই উৎসবপ্রেমী জাতি। লোকমুখে প্রচলিত “বাংলার মানুষের বারো মাসে তেরো পার্বণ” কথাটি মোটেই অত্যুক্তি নয়। সারা বছর জুড়েই বাঙালির জীবন নানা প্রকার উৎসবের আলোয় মুখরিত হয়ে থাকে। তবে এত সব উৎসবের মধ্যেও যেটি বাঙালির কাছে সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রিয় এবং অন্তরের উৎসব তথা বাঙালি জাতির সার্বজনীন, তা হল শরৎকালের দুর্গোৎসব।
বলা যায় বাঙালি জাতির সমগ্র প্রাণ এই পূজার মধ্যে নিহিত থাকে। বর্ষার কালো মেঘ সরিয়ে শরতের রোদ্দুর উকি দিলেই বাঙালির মন হিসেব কষতে শুরু করে দেয় মা দুর্গার আগমনের আর কতদিন বাকি। প্রতিদিনকার পরিচিত গতানুগতিক জীবনে ব্যাস্ত বাঙালি গোটা একটা বছর শত উৎসবের মধ্যেও অধীরভাবে প্রতীক্ষা করে থাকে এই মহোৎসবের জন্য।
