The Darjeeling Toy Train is officially called the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). It is one of India’s most famous mountain railways and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 1879 and 1881, the narrow-gauge railway connects New Jalpaiguri (NJP) with Darjeeling in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal.

Why it is famous

🚂 Known as the “Toy Train” because of its tiny steam locomotives and narrow tracks.
🚂 Climbs from about 100 m to 2,200 m altitude using ingenious loops and zigzags.
🚂 Recognized by UNESCO in 1999 as part of the “Mountain Railways of India.”
🚂 Offers spectacular Himalayan scenery, tea gardens, forests, and views of Kanchenjunga.
