Ground Report from Patharpratima K Plot...
It has been a month since the super cyclone Amphan had devastated major portions of Sundarbans. Already the people of this part of West Bengal are trying g to get back to its normalcy anyhow by either repairing their homes or arranging foods. But lockdown is still persistent and causing a major challenge. The 4th phase of our support, thus, directed to one such part of Sundarbans when our team went to the western part of Patharpratima K plot on 20th June.
The K plot is divided into 6 wards and there are nearly 10,000 people living in this island. During Amphan the river embankment on the eastern part got severely affected along with the houses. The villagers, mainly the men came along to repair the damages of the embankment as well as the houses while the children and the women were kept in the local school buildings. Even the electricity got restored in the village few days back. Currently their major challenge is to get back to work but lockdown is acting as major challenge. Nearly 785 people came back to the village who were working as migrant labourers in Delhi, Mumbai etc and now they are without work. There are also people working in the rice mill, cold storage, fishing locally etc on a daily basis and now without any regular income.
So we have decided to support a community kitchen being set up by the local villagers with the help from a local club which will cater to nearly 300-350 most needy people regularly. We supported them with120 kgs of lentil, 500 kgs of rice, 150 kgs of potato, 50 kgs of onion, 5 kgs of garlic, 5 kgs of ginger, 10 kgs of spice, 25 kgs of Salt to run the kitchen.
We are planning sapling plantation and reconstruction work in Sundarbans shortly...Join hands to reconstruct the affected areas...
