How safe is โsafe enoughโ?
National Aluminium Company Limitedโs alumina refinery in Damanjodi raises an uncomfortable question.
At the site, red mud a highly alkaline byproduct of the Bayer process is stored in large ponds.
With a pH of 10 to 13, this slurry is as caustic as industrial cleaning agents.
It contains toxic elements like chromium, arsenic, and caustic soda.
And it sits dangerously close to communities.
Studies and on-ground reports point to serious risks.
Leachate from these ponds can contaminate soil and groundwater.
Nearby streams show signs of pollution and even fish deaths.
Residents have reported skin irritation and burns after contact.
At the same time, National Aluminium Company Limited maintains that its waste management systems are scientifically designed.
They claim zero discharge.
They state that monitoring and testing are done regularly to prevent leaks.
So where does the truth lie?
Between data and lived experience, there is a growing trust gap.
This is not just about one refinery.
It is about how we manage industrial waste in a country where millions depend on groundwater every day.
When will we have stringent laws and stricter enforcement to protect our water bodies and groundwater?
If this doesnโt make you question our environmental priorities, what will?

This ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ 22, 2026, is a reality check.
The planet does not need more awareness.
It needs action.
With the theme โ๐๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ซ, ๐๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ญ,โ over a billion people across 190+ countries are mobilizing for climate action, renewable energy, and reducing plastic pollution.
But real impact does not begin on global stages.
It begins on the ground.
Our lakes are dying.
Our rivers are choking.
Our groundwater is depleting.
At Clean-Water, we work to restore water bodies and rebuild ecosystems that communities rely on every day.
Because climate action is not just about carbon.
It is about water, soil, and life.

Indiaโs air story in 2026 is a paradox we canโt ignore.
From being ranked the 6th most polluted country to having 74 of the worldโs 100 most polluted cities, this is alarming.
That is not just a statistic. It is a warning.
When places like Loni top global charts, it shows this is no longer a metro problem. It is everywhere.
We do not lack policies. From the National Clean Air Programme to EV pushes and GRAP frameworks, the intent is there.
But intent without ex*****on is just noise.
Most funds go to road dust.
Very little goes to industrial pollution. We still focus more on PM10 than the more harmful PM2.5.
Enforcement remains weak.
Real change needs clear priorities. It needs strong enforcement. It needs accountability.
Clean air cannot be optional. It has to be non-negotiable.
