April is Autism Awareness Month, and it's a special time to celebrate and support the incredible diversity of the human mind.

At Cognitii, we believe in embracing and appreciating every child for who they are, recognizing the unique strengths and talents that come with neurological differences.

This month, let's come together to spread understanding, kindness, and acceptance.

It's a chance to learn more, connect with others, and take action to make our world a more inclusive place for people with autism.

Join us in shining a light on autism, because every child deserves to be seen, understood, and cherished.

Let's make acceptance and appreciation the norm, not the exception.

Happy Autism Awareness Month!

πŸ“’ Neurodivergent individuals often communicate differently.

Let's take a peek at some of the different communication styles:

πŸ“·πŸŒŒ Visual Communication: Visual Communication involves the use of images, symbols, and graphics to convey information. It is used to often simplify complex concepts or tell a story without words. Using powerful visual symbols is a great way to teach neurodivergent individuals.

πŸ’¬ Verbal Communication: This involves the usage of words and spoken language to express thoughts and share information. The effectiveness of verbal communication relies on the individual's language skills. (Pro tip: Refrain from using indirect language or sarcasm)

πŸ’‘ Info-dumping: Neurodivergent individuals tend to share large amounts of information rapidly without sometimes considering the listener's knowledge or level of interest. It is mostly related to things that neurodivergent individuals are most passionate about!

πŸ”ƒ Echolalia: This is commonly observed in individuals on the autism spectrum. Echolalia is observed when an individual repeats words or phrases that they hear, often without understanding their meaning.

πŸ‘οΈπŸ€” Non-verbal Communication: Some neurodivergent individuals may never develop oral speech or language skills. Hence, they learn to communicate using gestures such as sign language. However, non-verbal communication isn't merely restricted to gestures or sign language, it encompasses facial expressions, posture, emotions, and cultural nuances, highlighting the subtleties in communication.

πŸ“±Assistive Technology Devices: Some neurodivergent individuals may have impairments in communication, hence there are devices designed to assist them such as speech-generating devices, offering a voice to those who may experience difficulties with traditional verbal communication.

🌈 Sensory Communication: This involves using sensory experiences such as touch, smell, taste, sight, and sound to convey information.

❌ Asking neurodivergent people to adapt to and conform to neurotypical expectations of communication can be counterproductive and harmful!
