The nation of and the nation of share deep historical and civilizational commonalities. Even in modern history, there is a significant parallel. India did not stand with imperialistic Iran prior to 1979. It was after the establishment of the Republic of Iran that our relationship evolved—grounded in mutual respect and a shared resistance to imperialism.

Both India and Iran have drawn strength from standing up to imperial powers. That spirit of sovereignty and dignity connects our histories.

However, in the last ten to eleven years, the direction taken by the present BJP government has altered the character of India’s foreign policy. An approach shaped by domestic polarization and hostility toward Muslims has not remained confined within our borders—it has inevitably influenced how India engages with the world.

The National Conference won the election on a clear promise to the people of Jammu & Kashmir: we will fight for the restoration of Article 370. Anything less than Article 370 is unacceptable and is a dilution that amounts to humiliation of the people of this state. I stand by the promise that was made. I will not echo the language of any other party, nor act as anyone’s proxy.
