Exploring the state of the art in digital photography.
In today’s post we look into EIS – Electronic Image Stabilization.
This video compares Gopro 11, Insta 360 and Apple iPhone 14 (action mode) using EIS and comparing to DJI Ossomo 2 as reference using mechanical gimbal stabilization.
Action cameras are often used to capture videos while walking, running and riding. The camera motion manifests as disturbing up/down left/right motion of the field of view. Today’s action cameras commonly deploy EIS. EIS is a method of synthetically shifting each frame of a video in order to compensate for the large displacement caused by the camera’s motion. In order to enable a large magnitude of shifting, such videos “crop” the output image, using a smaller than usual field of view. Such cropping leaves large margins on each side of the sensor which allow the shifted frames to remain within the sensor reception range.
