“This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you,” is an old line fathers used before spanking their children. Kids have joked about it for years, but it’s true—punishment is no fun for anyone involved. It’s still vital, though.

Like human fathers, God must correct His children when they disobey Him—and it’s all because of His profound love. He truly cares enough to discipline us when we stray from Him. Nobody likes to be punished, but when we learn from our errors, we come closer to God.

Thus you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
