PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is a short course of medicines (a pill) taken very soon after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent the virus from taking hold in your body.
Exposure can be due to condomless s*x by mutual choice, a condom fails, or condomless s*x or condom removal without consent or not used without awareness which is, s*xual assault.
After a course of PEP you need to wait 28 days before testing for HIV. This is because PEP can delay infection
PEP does not protect against STI’s.
Access must occur within 72 hours, ideally after 2 hours of exposure and PEP should not be offered where testing has shown that the source is HIV negative, or if the risk assessment has concluded that HIV infection of the source is unlikely.
If the HIV status of the source is unknown, a careful risk assessment would be carried out. (Example of the table assessment is also on the second photo)
PEP is available in many Sexual Health/STI clinics. If it is not possible to get PEP from your STI clinic within 72 hours (for example, if the clinic is closed in the evenings or at weekends), PEP can be accessed in a number of Hospital Emergency Departments.
With access and awareness to PEP it has a proven connection to the decrease in HIV diagnosis. (UK studies showing free access to PrEP and PEP have no shown a decrease in HIV diagnosis)
Yet...Ireland’s HIV rates are still increasing.
With the release of iKnow app, it will have a quick assessment which was mirrored from BAASH (British Association for AIDS And Sexual Health) and Terrence Higgins trust.
If in doubt download iKnow and as also, as always, speak to a medical professional of which iKnow will list testing locations and all app information available in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Polish.

Like all epidemics, HIV is widening the inequalities that are already in existence. Gender inequality, racial inequality, social and economic inequalities. As a world, we are becoming more unequal.
Ireland’s rates of HIV are showing year on year increase:
2016 - 508 new diagnosis
2017 - 492 new diagnosis
2018 - 523 new diagnosis
2019 not yet released
With our neighbouring country showing a decrease in new diagnosis, how can Ireland and those living in Ireland participate in a reduction in new diagnosis and contribute to combating stigma for those living with HIV?
Have open discussions on safer s*x practices that work best for you.
Know where to access regular testing.
Know about your access options to PrEP, which in Ireland is free.
Know about your access options to PEP and most importantly when. Within 72hours after exposure or condomless s*x.
Know someone living with HIV? Educated yourself on what this means and specifically what undetectability means specifically.
Or U = U.
HIV as a virus can be medically controlled individually.
HIV Stigma can be controlled collectively.
On World AIDS Day, know that there are people living with HIV in Public, in Private, in Pride and in Shame.
Be part of an eradication. Not a contribution to its retention. Education removes barriers to testing, diagnosis and shame.
iKnow will have information on undetectability and U=U specifically and for users to access symptoms associated to STI/HIV and most importantly, where to access proper medical testing and advice.
iKnow your options and iknow your information.
iKnow will be available on both iTunes and Google Play. No app currently exists providing users with access to varies s*xual health related information. This will be a first, and a first from Ireland.

Since the 1980’S there have also been 9,344 people newley diagnosed with HIV.
This is a rate of 11 people per population of 100,000.
