Conflict is a normal and inevitable part of being parents- whether you are in a relationship or not.
Destructive Conflict (name calling, violence, silent treatment, door slamming etc) can cause tremendous distress and anxiety to children, especially when they are exposed to this conflict over prolonged periods of time.
However, not all conflicts are upsetting or damaging to children, in fact many carry significant benefits for children.
Constructive Conflict (mutual respect, listening, shared responsibility, seeking solutions) can teach a child to assert themselves, express grievances and compromise in a healthy, positive way. When you model to children that there is a way to negotiate and work things out, they learn that it's normal to feel angry, it's normal to disagree. They learn to communicate better.
Do you let your children witness disagreements or do you shield them from all conflict?
