When thinking about Offaly, I think of the lives lived and generations passed. The jobs and roles of people and the way of life that grew around this. We were a county of industry capitalising on abundant natural resources. Whether that be the ESB or the Bord Na Mona factories and working bogs. Deep traditions that are now gone.

The success of Offaly GAA back in the day was built on the capacity of the area to provide gainful employment, keeping its sons in the locality. I remember attending the homecoming in 1998. The square was packed; the pubs were all packed. Those days are gone now. I still frequent Offaly regularly, playing gigs in pubs in Birr, Ferbane and Banagher. Beautiful towns, but quieter towns. The Offaly Rover reminds me of a time when life was for living, and jobs were there to provide, not consume.
