Dollar as the world's reserve currency pegged to gold. However, in 1971, President Nixon unilaterally severed the dollar's link to gold because the U.S. was printing more money than its gold reserves could back.

Since then, the dollar has been backed by nothing but "faith."

This system benefits the U.S. by allowing it to print money to fund deficits, while the rest of the world (and individuals) pays the price through inflation.
