Weaving Songket on a foot-loom is traditional and an important part of Minangkabau and West Sumatran culture. Preserving weaving techniques and the use of traditional motifs are apart of keeping alive Minangkabau culture.
Did you know West Sumatra is the ancestral homeland of the Minangkabau culture? and that Minangkabau is the largest matrilineal culture in the world?
Keeping cultural art and traditions is an important part of empowerment and sustainable develop. When you purchase our textiles, you are support women to continue to practise their traditional craft to a modern market.

Our weaving initiative was started to provide Minang women in rural villages the skills to earn an income. We also wanted their businesses to be friendly to their bodies and the communities, so we ran natural dyeing classes.
This fabric was dyed using candle bush and guava. The dyeing process takes 3 days, from collecting the items in the jungle, to extracting the beautiful colours.
