The Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), hosted a seminar on the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Trademarks on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the Grenada Room, Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, Grand Anse, St. George.

The seminar brought together policymakers, trademark agents, attorneys-at-law, members of the private sector, and other stakeholders to increase awareness of the Madrid Protocol and its implementation in Grenada following the countryโ€™s accession to the international treaty.

The Madrid Protocol is an efficient and cost-effective mechanism that allows trademark owners to seek protection for their trademarks internationally through a single application filed with the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Through the system, applicants may designate more than 130 countries in which they wish to protect their trademarks, eliminating the need to file separate applications in each jurisdiction.

Delivering remarks at the opening ceremony, Senator the Hon. Claudette Joseph, Attorney General and Minister for Legal Affairs, Labour and Consumer Affairs, described Grenadaโ€™s implementation of the Madrid Protocol as a significant milestone in the countryโ€™s intellectual property development.

โ€œToday marks a significant milestone in the development of Grenadaโ€™s intellectual property infrastructure. Through the Madrid Protocol, we are equipping our entrepreneurs and exporters with the tools needed to safeguard their brands internationally and unlock new opportunities for growth,โ€ Senator Joseph stated.

Minister Joseph also noted that the Madrid System provides substantial benefits for businesses by simplifying the trademark registration process and reducing the costs associated with securing protection in multiple jurisdictions.

The seminar was facilitated by representatives of WIPO and featured a presentation by Ms. Lucy Headington-Horton, Senior Legal Officer within WIPOโ€™s Madrid Legal Division, Brands and Designs Sector. Participants received valuable insights into the operation of the Madrid System, the opportunities it presents for Grenadian businesses, and the practical implications of the Protocol for trademark owners and trademark agents.

CAIPOโ€™s Registrar, Mr. Robert Branch, welcomed the engagement of stakeholders and emphasized the importance of the seminar in ensuring that businesses and intellectual property practitioners are equipped to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the Madrid Protocol.

Grenadaโ€™s accession to the Madrid Protocol forms part of the Governmentโ€™s ongoing efforts to modernize the countryโ€™s intellectual property framework, support innovation, enhance competitiveness, and facilitate access to international markets for local businesses.

CAIPO remains committed to working closely with WIPO and national stakeholders to strengthen the intellectual property ecosystem and promote the effective use of intellectual property as a tool for economic growth and sustainable development.
