Warwickshire County Council leader fumes over prospect of cancelling borough elections in Rugby Rugby Borough Council is to be asked whether they wish to cancel May’s local elections – and the Reform UK leader of Warwickshire County Council is not happy.

Rugby Borough Council has published a report about the possible cancelling of May's elections and it makes one thing very clear - the council is fully able to run the May 2026 elections as planned.

The council's report has confirmed that all the main preparations are in place - venues are booked, staff are lined up, printing is arranged, and everything is ready to deliver an election. The report was published late on Christmas Eve.

We believe Rugby residents deserve to have their say on the progress of Rugby Borough Council - which has been under Labour and Lib Dem control for almost two years.

When the council’s own report shows no real reason to cancel, pressure is now on Rugby's Labour and Lib Dem councillors to confirm that elections will go ahead as planned.

Any other decision would be entirely political - to dodge a tricky set of elections for both parties.

The Electoral Commission has also warned that delaying elections would weaken local democracy.

The Labour Leader of Rugby Borough Council is himself up for election - it would be totally unthinkable for someone in this position to cancel the elections. We're also asking about whether Rugby was one of the councils that wrote to the government requesting postponement earlier this year.

We are confident however that Rugby Borough Council now has no legitimate reason to cancel the elections - thanks to the council's own report.
