Watching The Arctic Monkeys dreary set at Glastonbury last night (which ultimately sent me to bed) reminded me of when we did their first album at Sunday Vinyl Session at the back end of 2019. I'd never heard the album before over the few singles released from it but was pleasantly surprised when I gave it a spin before the day of the session.
During the session we had a young Sapnish woman with us who listed it as one of her favourite ever albums. She very kindly accepted the suggestion that maybe she would like to stand up and say something about it, as a non-British person to find out why, this very Anglocentric album. She explained that she would come home from school, get changed out of her uniform and her and her friends would dance around to it. That record helped to convince her that she wanted to live and work in England. What a story. And who knows if she knew what a Mardy Bum is?
That's something that Alex Turner and Co should consider when deciding which direction to take the band in next because that current lounge lizard sound is incredibly uninspiring for anyone.
