🌫️ UPDATE: NORTH AMERICAN WILDFIRE SMOKE OVER THE UK

The Met Office has confirmed that smoke from wildfires in North America is drifting southwards across the UK. This smoke is travelling high in the atmosphere and can give otherwise clear skies a hazy or opaque appearance, making the blue look much less vivid than usual.

It is likely that some of this smoke is also passing above Kent. However, the extensive grey skies across the county this morning appear to be mainly genuine cloud, rather than wildfire smoke alone. The smoke could become more noticeable if the cloud breaks, with any sunshine potentially appearing rather hazy.

What about breathing conditions?

Current official forecasts suggest air pollution will remain mostly low, although a few pockets of moderate pollution are possible across southern England. There are currently no official air-quality alerts, so this is not expected to cause problems for most people.

Those with asthma or existing heart or lung conditions may be more sensitive to smoke particles and should keep medication nearby and avoid strenuous outdoor activity if they notice coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or unusual breathlessness.

So, an interesting visitor from across the Atlantic . But the stubborn cloud over Kent this morning cannot all be blamed on Canada!

Have you noticed a milky or unusually washed-out appearance to the sky where you are? 🌫️

🌅 KENT’S EVENINGS ARE SLOWLY DRAWING IN…

Today marks the first time this summer that sunset in Kent has slipped back to before 9PM, with the sun setting at around 8:59PM.

We’re certainly not heading into autumn just yet, but since the longest day in June, the amount of daylight has been gradually decreasing.

The mornings are now taking a little longer to brighten up, while darkness is beginning to arrive slightly earlier each evening. The change is only a minute or two each day, so it can be difficult to notice at first, but those minutes soon begin to add up!

At the beginning of July, sunrise in Kent was around 4:46AM and sunset was around 9:16PM. Today, sunrise is approximately 5:08AM and sunset is 8:59PM. That means we’ve already lost nearly 40 minutes of daylight in just three weeks.

There’s still plenty of summer and plenty of long evenings ahead, but the days have officially begun their slow journey towards the shorter daylight hours of autumn.

Have you started noticing the evenings drawing in yet, or are you refusing to accept it until September? 😄🌇

Over 5 Million Views In 28 Days!

It really takes me by surprise when I see these stats.

Less than 1 year ago I launched the page as a bit of fun. There are several established Kent weather pages that have been around for a few years and haven't got over 10,000 followers. So I thought I would be doing well if I could match them. But very shortly we will go over 35,000 followers.

Little did I know when starting the page in September 2025 that in less than 12 months I would be at over 3 times the followers of other pages and get over 5 Million views on my page and content in a 28 day period.

I'm not saying to brag, just proud of what I have achieved in a short period of time.

My style is very different to other pages and maybe that is what's making this page grow quicker? I really don't know. I do know that it has become a bit of a community and people like to feel part of a community so maybe that's why?

Anyhow, 5 million+ views on a little Kent based weather page is impressive and I thank everyone who contributes to the page by liking content, commenting, sharing and messaging me.

I appreciate you all.

Also a big thanks to Dawny (Admin Dawny) who recently volunteered to help out a little with replying to comments and doing the odd bit of content when I am working.

Love, John xx

PS If you'd like to show your appreciation you can always treat me to a coffee. No pressure, only if you'd like to. I will still be producing content with or without a coffee 😊
