A group of players are hitting the streets of Helsinki on May Day to pick up women - here’s how to recognize a pickup artist

Hitting on women is a hundred million dollar business worldwide. Expensive courses are also organized in Finland.

According to Yle’s information, women have been approached with practiced pickup lines in Helsinki and Espoo in March-April. The approachers have been over thirty and nervously looking men. Pickup lines have been tried on multiple targets in succession.

Hitting on women is a hundred million dollar business worldwide, and training courses for it are also organized in Finland. Courses led by pickup artists typically consist of a theory part and practical training.

One of the most famous pickup artists is the forty-something Robert “Beckster” Beck. Beckster has visited Helsinki several times to train men in the secrets of mating. He is organizing a boot camp in Helsinki again on April 30 - May 1.

Beckster tells Yle that the spring approaches have not been related to his courses. According to Beckster, asking for contact information is not “gaming.” The goal of his courses is to charm a woman so that she ends up asking for the man’s contact information.

Beckster’s boot camp, starting at 5000 euros, kicks off today, Tuesday, and hits the streets of Helsinki. The following techniques are ones that aspiring players may use.

Negging
If a man stops you on the street and comments on your shoes in a belittling tone, you may have become the target of negging.

Negging is one of the classic techniques of pickup artists. According to pickup artists, it’s not about offending but about attracting attention with something negative. The idea is that a woman becomes interested in a man who doesn’t try to hit on her by praising her appearance, for example.

Kino
Kino refers to touching. The idea is that physical contact strengthens the connection between the pick-up artist and the pick-up target. Kino can mean cheek kisses, putting a hand on the shoulder, or palm reading.

Kino is often presented as a multi-stage technique, progressing gradually towards more intimate closeness.

Peacocking
Erik “Mystery” von Markovik is a master of peacocking. The pickup artist is known for his long dark hair, large brimmed hats, and colorful scarves.

The idea of peacocking is that a flashy accessory or even painted nails attracts a woman’s attention. The technique is named after the peacock, where males seduce females with flashy plumage.

Demonstrating Higher Value
This is akin to peacocking. A woman is shown a skill or trait that sets the man apart from others. Higher value can be evaluated by metrics such as physics, wealth, and status.

False Time Constraint
The man claims to have to leave soon by saying, for example, “I can only stay here for a second.” Or: “If I didn’t have to leave soon, then…” The woman relaxes realizing that the man is not going to latch onto her company for the whole evening. The end result is hopefully the opposite: the woman lowers her guard, and the player moves closer.

Time Distortion
By distorting time, the woman is made to feel as if she has known the man for a long time. The woman can be taken to several places in the same evening, making the shared time feel like a series of experiences, or asked to imagine, for example, six months into the future. If the player has played his cards right, the woman imagines herself with the player.

Push-Pull
In this method, the player first appears very interested and then not at all. The idea is that this makes the woman want to pick up the man. The phenomenon has been compared to a cat becoming interested in a toy only when it’s pulled away.
